New maintenance facility increases locomotive repair efficiency

Supreme Structures built an 18,000 sq ft locomotive maintenance facility for Watco’s Wisconsin & Southern Railroad, designed to improve workflow, safety, and repair efficiency. After three years of planning, site visits, and operational analysis, the team delivered a pre-engineered metal building equipped for heavy-duty locomotive service, including specialized infrastructure for wheel and undercarriage repairs.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS

  • Custom drop pit designed to extract, service, and reinstall locomotive wheels
  • 25-ton double girder turbo crane installed by bringing components in on a flatbed railcar
  • Two maintenance pits and capacity to service up to four 200-ton locomotives at once
  • Horizontal borings with steel casing to run new utilities beneath active rail lines
  • 2,000 sq ft office/support area with mezzanine, locker rooms, showers and break room
  • Locomotives now pull directly into the facility for streamlined maintenance
