You may not have heard the term “pre-engineered metal building” (PEMB) before, but it’s very likely that you’ve seen them around the Madison area. PEMBs are often single-story structures that are framed, sided, and roofed with metal. They can have a wide variety of design details and finishes to match different architectural styles.
“The versatility of PEMBs makes them ideal for many uses, including recreational, retail, industrial, light manufacturing, transportation, municipal buildings and more,” says Mike Trapino, vice president of Supreme Structures. Some of the benefits of using PEMBs include:
- Speed of construction. Because a PEMB comes as a material package, everything needed for the building is pre-fitted and ready to assemble at once, which shortens the building schedule. - Lower cost. The pre-engineering and manufacturing of the material package typically cost less than other types of construction. PEMBs are often erected on a flat concrete slab, so there is no need to excavate and build a basement.

The metal panels come in many colors, including custom, and stonework or other finishes can be added for aesthetic value.
- Sustainability. A PEMB can be sustainably manufactured and built to conform to environmental regulations. The resulting building can also be quite energy efficient.
