Whether you’re thinking of building new or adding on to an existing structure, this type of building is more versatile than you might expect and offers many benefits that make it worth considering.
ADVANTAGES OF PRE-ENGINEERED METAL BUILDINGS

You may not have heard the term “pre-engineered metal building” (PEMB) before, but it’s very likely that you’ve seen them around the Madison area. PEMBs are often single-story structures that are framed, sided, and roofed with metal. They can have a wide variety of design details and finishes to match different architectural styles.
“The versatility of PEMBs makes them ideal for many uses, including recreational, retail, industrial, light manufacturing, transportation, municipal buildings and more,” says Mike Trapino, vice president of Supreme Structures. Some of the benefits of using PEMBs include:
- Speed of construction. Because a PEMB comes as a material package, everything needed for the building is pre-fitted and ready to assemble at once, which shortens the building schedule. An accelerated construction schedule can accelerate the return you expect from facility improvements; for example, increased sales from manufacturing expansion.
- Lower cost. The pre-engineering and manufacturing of the material package typically cost less than other types of construction. PEMBs are often erected on a flat concrete slab, so there is no need to excavate and build a basement.
- Lower maintenance. An all-steel building is very sturdy and holds up well in Wisconsin’s climate. The metal siding and roof panels can be coated with a special mixture that helps make the building more energy-efficient, which also lowers ongoing costs. This coating also helps the building last longer.
- Highly customizable. PEMBs are often used for projects from 5,000 to 20,000 square feet but can be almost any size. They can also be added to existing buildings. PEMBs’ steel framing allows them to be very tall and wide open inside, making them ideal for atriums, sports facilities, restaurants, retail venues and more. The metal panels come in many colors, including custom, and stonework or other finishes can be added for aesthetic value.
- Sustainability. A PEMB can be sustainably manufactured and built to conform to environmental regulations. The resulting building can also be quite energy efficient.
SUPREME STRUCTURES CAN HELP YOUR BUSINESS GROW

Supreme Structures has incorporated PEMBs into many client projects. “The many advantages of this type of building mean that PEMBs are becoming more popular,” says Mike. Some of Supreme’s PEMB projects include KEVA Multi-Tenant Facility and Field, Watco, and Miller & Sons Grocery Mount Horeb.
When working on PEMBs, Supreme Structures provides the full scope of general contractor services, including preconstruction, sitework, excavation, mechanical, engineering, plumbing, fire protection, interior framing and finishes, and more.
